Originally inhabited by the Pocomtuc Native American tribe, the land that is now known as Enfield was settled in 1679 by settlers from Salem, Massachusetts. It was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1683, but after a 1749 lawsuit, became part of Connecticut. During the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards delivered his famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," in Enfield.
